                  Conformal Coating - Why, What and Where?

        The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council will
        hold its next meeting on Tuesday, June 8th at 6pm in the
        cafeteria of American Power Conversion (APC) in Billerica MA.

        Paul Gallo, Eastern Manager for dispensing equipment vendor
        Asymtek, will present on the Conformal Coating process.  The
        talk will cover why conformal coating is needed, types avail-
        able, methods for applying it and considerations needed in
        design and production to ensure a quality product.  Discussion
        will also touch on curing considerations and justification for
        capital investment.

        Paul is Asymtek's Eastern North America Area Manager, and has
        responsibility for Sales and Applications Engineering for the
        U.S. East Coast and most of Canada.  He has been with Asymtek
        for over 11 years, and has been involved with a wide variety
        of fluid dispensing applications, including underfill, encap-
        sulation, chipbonder and solder paste, as well as shielding,
        die attach and LCD panel manufacturing.  Asymtek is a world
        leader in fluid dispensing systems for IC and PCB production,
        with systems ranging from benchtop to fully automated and con-
        veyorized integrated systems.

        then proceed past Exxon station, then take the 2nd right,
        this is Rangeway Rd to Forest Ridge Office Park, proceed to
        #85, left to Building 2.

        President's Note:

        As electronic complexity increases and equipment gets deployed
        in ever harsher places the surrounding environment becomes more
        important.  The proper use of conformal coating will help keep
        equipment in service, or perhaps more importantly, performing
        consistently through cycles of difficult environmental swings.
        Gone are the days of large external spacings that would almost
        never grow a dendrite or inject low level leakage currents or
        change parasitics at very low margins.

        Keep your company's products working through a full life cycle
        by knowing what's needed downstream and how to specify coatings
        appropriate to your needs.

        This meeting will conclude this spring's meeting season.  Over
        the summer we may try an outing, and we do have an IPC Learning
        Symposium to look forward to July 13-17 in Chelmsford at the
        Radisson Hotel.  This show will include presentations, work-
        shops, as well as a Designer Certification workshop and test.

        Mission:

        The physical design of circuit boards is only getting more
        complex.  Only the physical designer can hope to sort out
        the myriad interests that add up to a printed circuit board.
        This represents an opportunity to avoid competing with off-
        shore labor rates doing routine place and route.  Add value!

        The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council is
        trying to bring those stake holders, from every discipline,
        to show you their problems and solutions so you can add to
        your arsenal of knowledge.
