From my experience, having used Expedition for many years and currently using PADS,
(used Allegro for a very short time), it really depends on the type of designs
you will be doing MOST of the time. If you are doing matched length very dense
designs all day every day then Expedition or Allegro are your main choices (I prefer Expedition)
and really should be using this level of tool or yes it takes way longer to get anything done.
But like some said there is PADS Pro which is really a lite version of Expedition.
If most of the design you do are not heavily constrained, very dense designs and only see
a couple of those type a year then generally speaking any tool could do the job just certain types
of design will take you a little longer.
My only real complaint about Mentor is they are way behind on the 3D part of their tool.

Hello council..! Hope all are doing well in the land of PCB design..! Just wanted to check on users of "Mentor Graphic Expedition... How do YOU like this tool... As a new user I'm finding that the simple thing and or trivial things are no producible and or don't perform as one would think from a PCB designer's standpoint... one issue, no smart .pdf from the layout side and or "FabLink"..? also rule setting parameters for trace widths , min, target, max... if your trace isn't to one of these specific numbers in these setting you get a warning..? WOW, rather than a range within the min-max, like PADS... What is your experience with this tool..?
