Hi Steve,
First, the designer is part of a Team. Each member of the team has a
different responsibility for the success of the project. The designer is
responsible for combining the requirements of the EE and ME into the circuit
board and making sure it can be processed by manufacturing. That's it.
The EE is responsible for the functionality of the electronic design. The
ME is responsible for the mechanical functionality of the design. And the
manufacturing groups are responsible for making sure their processes meet
the specs laid out by the design team. The company is responsible for the
end product.
The designer may follow up with the other team members to find out what
worked and didn't work with the design. This will help with their ability to
produce better future designs. However, once the EE & ME have examined
and approved the design, the manufacturers have agreed that they can build it
per the specs, then the designer is done with their part.
Changes to the design based on a change to the original requirements from
any of the other team members for any reason, are the start of a new design
cycle (or REVISION). The original designer may be part of that revision
cycle or it may be assigned to another designer.
I've seen variations on this over the years depending on company policies,
contract negotiations, and miss-understandings of who does what. Many
companies have tried to combine the designer responsibilities with either the
EE or the ME or even the manufacturers. These usually creates confusion,
time delays, and friction in the team.
If a company has a defined PROCESS and they follow it, then everything
goes much smoother (and costs less). Also, don't rush the process. The best
results come from a good steady pace with everyone doing their part and
supporting each other instead of looking to place blame. Having quick design
reviews on a weekly basis with the whole team really helps stop delays down
the line.
Hope that helps,

Well, I think that needs to be qualified up front in the design cycle, so
the correct types of components and materials are selected to meet the
specified requirements.
That's not really what I'm driving at in my question though. What I'm
looking for relates more to how far do we as designers ACTIVELY go in tracking
the status of a board once it's assembled and handed over to EE's or
manufacturing. Is it our responsibility to know if the board is performing as it
should? Are we directly responsible to find out that information?

Hi Steve,
You might not want to hear this, but, besides function, the design shall
also ensure long term reliability. And since the long term reliability goes
all the way until the end of the life cycle of the product, the designer
should be liable a long time after the design is completed and successfully
tested for functionality.
I suggest IPC-D-279 as a good reading.

[log in to unmask] Objet : [DC] Designer's Responsibility ends.....when?
Hello:
Just want to get an opinion on a certain matter. Where does a designers
responsibility end? After successful assembly, after successful functional
tests by EE's? System test? By responsibility, I mean tracking wise. Should
we be chasing after EE's to make sure everything tested out okay, while were
busy designing another board? How far do we chase? How far do they (MGMT)
expect YOU to chase?
Thank You,
Steve Horvath
