5...Pulsonix may also be on a par with Eagle (or better). We looked at
several before we bought Altium and I was quite impressed with the pulsonix
package.http://pulsonix.com/
My Vote is Altium but it does too much over and above pcb layout.and the
fpga interface isn't so good.

Subject: Re: [DC] CAD tool Benchmarks?

Ha.. okay, I like this thread. :)

Now I'm not completely sure who the 'BIG four' would be... but if I was to
guess, I would say the following.

1. Cadence/Orcad (? per seat)
2. Mentor/Pads (approx.40K per seat for expedition)
3. Altium Designer (approx. 3K a seat)
4. (? not sure who fills this spot... Zuken/Cadstar? Intercept/Pantheon?
Other?)
5. Who else should be on this list? EAGLE?
6. ???

Would we base this hierarchy on seats in the field? Or in terms of revenue?
Or feature/processing power or what?

This would be general all around PCB design packages... ones that work for
all types of boards... Digital, Analog, RF, Microwave, Flex, etc. I know
there are some very specialized ones...

You shouldn't just restrict it to the "big four". I used to use a high-end
package from one of the "big-four" (50k/pcb seat) and when I changed jobs
had to learn a medium-end package from a company that wasn't in the big four
(4k/pcb seat). The new medium-end package knocked the socks off the
high-end package I'd been using in terms of the number of features, ease of
use, and the level of support.
