Jack, there is little sense in moving back to the 782. By the way, nice to
see so much interest now; strange how difficult it was to fire up anybody
about volunteering a year and a half ago.
Anyhow, based on interest by some to use the calculator from non-Windows
platforms and the discussions started here some time ago, over the past
couple weeks we explored options for transferring the 'basic' 7351 LP
Calculator functions online - yes, for free. Even the basic functions of the
7351 would still be a nice upgrade from the previous 782 tool. We will of
course, offer additional features for those who choose to get the licensed
version.
Among the information that has been considered:
- tolerance settings (user defined)
- environment variables (least, nominal, most)
- land pattern info (pad, courtyard, silkscreen)
- solderjoint (toe, heel, side)
- statistics (Gmin, Zmax)
Basically, the free online calculator would be a compromise between the 7351
LP Calculator we created and the old 782 tool:
782: 12 Component families
7351: 52 Component families
782: 350 included packages
7351: 3,000+ included packages
782: no standardized naming convention
7351: standard naming convention
782: 0.5mm placement courtyard grid
7351: 0.05mm placement courtyard grid
782: 1 fixed graphic
7351: dynamic graphic to scale based on user input w/ component to
landpattern view (may not be available in the free version)
782: 1 Low resolution bitmap
7351: Zoomable graphic to identify errors, improve accuracy (may not be
available in the free version)
782: No silkscreen or polarity marking guidelines
7351: Contains silkscreen and polarity marking data
782: No assembly outline data
7351: Contains assembly outline data

What I had envisioned is a main page linking to separate pages for each
type
of part. Each subpage would have the form elements (text boxes, pulldowns,
etc) needed to input and output the required design information, including
the stuff to fine tune for a particular company's process. This could be
done by anyone who knows HTML or one of the HTML editors (like Front Page).
The JavaScript code to stitch them together and perform the calculations
would be added by others.
No storage, approval process, or frills. Just a basic calculator (Sort of
on the order of the trace width calculator on my site.) Since it would be
based on each a page for each device type, it would lend itself to as many
people who wanted to volunteer. I would think a minimum of 6 or 7, anyway.
Perhaps not enough people know JavaScript or HTML to do this, but I don't
have the time for this to be just my project. I guess I'm still in the
60's, when it still was OK to do things just because it was good for
others,
not because you could corner the market.

Well, its no stretch of the imagination to think that if IPC is
collaborating with PCBLibraries on IPC-7351, then they are certainly not
going to initiate or support anything that looks competitive, which is
probably why we haven't heard a peep from anyone official about the online
calculator. Who knows what kind of agreements they made already?
So, we have probably lost that free service forever. We heard it from the
top, "BUSINESS IS WAR", right? sucks eggs...
Anyhoo, I didn't dare volunteer because I have no idea what you are talking
about... just kidding! But I don't have good web-programming experience,
and I don't have a good idea of what it would take to at least get the
simple functionality working again like it was before. All I know how to do
is scan my kid's artwork or a photo and slap it into the family webpage. (

So if you are one of those web-design gurus, what is the perfect number of
people (enough that no one is overwhelmingly burdened, not so many that
"too many cooks spoil the pot") and how would you split up the tasks? What
ARE the tasks, anyway?

I can't help but notice that the "working draft" of IPC-2152 is dated
November 2002, and ThermalMan was created in December 2002.
Has this project gone commercial on us now?
There sure was a lot of hype about this a couple of years ago, and still
nothing practical for the common man.
Is the IPC document release being delayed now that it has been turned into
a money-making machine?
