Steve,
This has come up as an item of discussion with us also.
Yesterday I had this email discussion.

Subject: Re: Designer Dollars

Karl,

Companies join the IPC for $1000 each year. For that $1000, the company can purchase an unlimited quantity of documents, videos and CDs at member prices.

Individuals join the IPC Designers Council for $50 each year. For that $50, the individual recieves $300 worth of discounts down to IPC member company prices. (Essentially, the Designer Council member is limited to $300 worth of documents, videos and CDs at IPC member company prices).

For Designers Council members who work for a company that is already a member of IPC, the benefits of membership are limited to technical networking, guiding the development of the PCB design profession, receiving the ROUTE (newsletter), giving input to IPC Designers Council programs, and participating in local design-related forums. The monetary
benefits already exist because their employer is an IPC member company.

IPC does have a minimum cost to documents that must be covered (alas IPC member company pricing).

Hope this explains the reasoning behind our procedures.

Lisa

I feel that this is an unfair policy. Basically what this tells me is that Designer Council members are not seen as members of the IPC. If I run out of Designer Dollars than I am only able to purchase IPC documents at non-member prices!?! If money is an issue, perhaps a better policy would be something along these lines:

-All Designer council members receive member prices on IPC documents.
-$300 worth of Designer Dollars are given to a member only when they first join the Designer Council, providing an extra incentive to join.
-When they're used up, that's it, no more are given for subsequent membership renewals.
-Designer Dollars apply toward the member prices and not the difference between member/non-member prices.
-Once the Designer Dollars are used up than any subsequent purchases would be at member prices.

I hope these suggestions are helpful.

Tom

I have been a card carrying member for two years. I keep hearing
about the $300.00 discounts on IPC docs, however no one in our chapter seem to know how to cash them in. Also will this also apply to the new training CD's.

Thanks
