I recently started a new position, I am back into designing PCB's and
electronics. I spent the last two years with a great CM as an NPI Engineer.
There I had a chance to learn the processes, write DFX reports on new
designs and offer suggestions to customers on how to make their design more
manufacturable. Prior to leaving I wrote the 32 page DFM guidelines they
use, implemented DFM reviews and learned just enough around a SMT line to
get me into a ton of trouble. I was lucky enough to work with some very
smart people. Between test, manufacturing, design and quality I think we
were able to come up with one of the best DFM guidelines available. One of
the most valuable bits of information is how to design, document, and
present my designs to a CM. It is also very interesting when I tell them I
used to work for a CM. What ever contract manufacture we decide to go with I
hope will be very pleased with what they receive from us.
As for lurking, there is a radio station in Milwaukee and when the DJ's
come up with a question they don't have an answer for they go to the
"Throbbing Brain". The "Throbbing Brain" is all the listeners on the air and
or online. From that they pretty much have their answer by the end of their
show if not within a day or two. Most of the time I am writing a response
only to see the answer pop up in my inbox. So I delete the message and go
about my work. Once in a while I will post an answer, sometimes I will wait
to see what others think. Is my answer the same as everyone else or can I
offer more insight. Here you are usually pretty well covered on the first
response.
