I think that would depend on how thick your base material is. As far as I know, most press fit connectors are used in backplane applications where the board is thicker than 0.062. Flex of the board during press is what you have to watch as flex would crack the surface mount component joints.
Check with the connector company engineering department. They should be able to advise you.
