Hi Ron,
All my padstacks are "coded" with the drill symbology used on the
fabrication drawing. In Cadence it's really easy, and the fab drawings
generally take no more than 1/2 - 1 hour to finalize (if the designer
needs more, he gets more training!), including plots and checking time.
Remember when developing the drill symbology that you can combine a
range of hole sizes into a "specific" symbol. You should never need
anything near 46 symbols. At most I'll have maybe 15 different drill
sizes on my boards, and if a padstack needs to "round up" to a larger
hole size (for simplification), I mod the padstack, and the system DRCs
any problems. I will normally modify 2-3 padstacks to round up and limit
the number of holes sizes needed, but I will not "round down".
Good luck.
Mitch :)
