Supply chain, and board assembly house issues aside, hopefully, in the
future, a customer will have a board that, unfortunately, requires
rework or replacement. Assume cost issues will prevent a respin.
Someone in Tech Support will have the job of determining which drawing,
BOM, etc applies to what the customer has. A well-documented Assembly
drawing will prevent an interruption to the board designer or engineer
to review ECO's and As-builts.
This As-Built assembly drawing needs to include ON the assembly drawing,
a table of revisions that includes ref. designators/part locations with
leader lines pointing to line items numbers on the BOM to show the part
changes, per parts list ECO.
By not synchronizing the Assy/BOM, you might save yourself time now, but
you are not saving time down the line, because you forced someone to
re-invent the ECO's. Not a job I particularly like to do, but have done
before.
One note: I worked with and really liked the Agilesoft PDM, but its
expensive.

Michael Howell
