An example that we have used as our standard (from our CM group for that
matter) format both at L-3 and back when I worked for ADC
Telecommunications is similar to what you have stated:
For the pcb : "PWB, MODEM, LOW-COST" (type, function, product or
project)
For the schematic:"SCHEMATIC, MODEM, LOW-COST"
FOR THE CCA(ASSY): "CCA, MODEM, LOW-COST"
Typically all three are a related number sequence to aid in hunting down
documents.

We are having some issues with our CM (configuration or CONFOUNDED
management) team changing the way in which we title drawings.
We (the designers) are of the opinion that the titles should be PWB or
PCB, Function, Unit - Additional Modifier; i.e. PCB, MOTHER BOARD, 386 -
TOWER CASE.
Our CM group is pushing for naming that includes only Function, PWB;
i.e. MOTHER BOARD, PWB. What is the industry as a whole doing? What is
preferred? Is there a good standards document to work to?
