I have taken representative sample of the Alto bulbs for about 8 months and
have yet to have one fail the Hg test.
We purchased a bulb crusher and sampled contents at three intervals.

We now send our whole bulbs to Environmental Light Recyclers (Forth Worth,
Tx)
for recycling at a cost of .40 per bulb.
David

     John,
A word of caution on low-mercury lamps. At a recent (Feb. 97) 2-Day
RCRA seminar at Arizona State University, we were warned specificly
that some Phillips Alto lamps will fail the Hg test, which could put
you in violation if you are not handling them as a universal waste.
I don't know Phillips' position on this, perhaps they disagree and
     could prove otherwise.
I have not heard of any fluorescent lamps completely free of Hg.
     Jim Thrush

Philips makes a low Hg bulb called the Alto. This bulb has the full color
spectrum and cost about .30 more per bulb.

Hello ComplianceNetters:

Does anyone know a source for mercury-free fluorescent light tubes, in
4-foot lengths? If anyone has been using them, I would like to know the
vendor contact, and how well they light, and how long they last.
