IPC is actively involved in EPA's Common Sense Initiative (CSI) through its Computers and Electronics Subcommittee (CES). The CSI is an EPA regulatory reinvention initiative that is examining how to promulgate environmental regulations that will achieve cleaner environmental results, for less money, and in more efficient ways than the current "command and control" system.

One of the projects that the CES is exploring is a Zero Wastewater Discharge Project. The goal of the project is to identify real world examples of electronics manufacturing facilities which have gone to closed loop treatment and recycle systems and examine how the systems could fit into existing RCRA treatment, storage, and disposal facility permit exemptions.

If successful, this program would help encourage pollution prevention at PWB shops by reducing the current regulatory requirements that apply to such shops.

EPA is looking for PWB shops that have achieved (or are close to achieving) zero discharge in their wastewater systems. If you are such a shop, or if you know of such a shop, please contact Jan Goodwin, EPA's Office of Water via phone at (202) 260-7152 , via e.mail at [log in to unmask], or via regular mail at Janet Goodwin, U.S. EPA, Office of Water, Office of Science and Technology, Engineering and Analysis Division (4304), Washington, D.C. 20460.
